st any other person in Springfield. The popularnotion fathered by numerous writers that the two werehostile to each other and at outs most of the time has nosure foundation on which to rest. That they did not in-variably and completely agree on all subjects is doubtlesstrue, but it does not necessarily follow that they hatedeach other. In fact the correspondence between them,much of which I have been privileged to read, as well asthe many facts I gathered during my association with Mr.Herndon, convince me to the contrary. I cannot, there-fore, resist the conclusion, regardless of the things whichhave found their way into the columns of some of ournewspapers and magazines, that Mr. Herndon and Mrs.Lincoln, all things considered, held each other in generousand reasonable esteem. Of all theladies to whom Mr. Lincoln paid court she was undoubt-edly the most versatile and accomplished. An animatedand interesting talker, she was also a shrewd observer, andin some respects a better and more intuitive judge of menthan her husband. But unfortunately for her and thosewith whom she came in contact, she seemed to lack thevery elements calculated to win the reverence and retainthe affection of a man of Mr. Lincolns type. Not entirelyfree from an appearance of haughty disdain, she was de-void of patience, tolerance, and self-control. In her letters,some of which were addressed to me and others which Ihave read, she invariably speaks of her husband in themost endearing and affectionate language; and yet I amsure her fearless, austere, and caustic nature greatly marredthe blissful companionship which should have existed
