Of the 254 persons killed and 490 injured from causesother than accidenis to trains, rolling stock, permanentway, etc., including accidenis at level crossings and fromwant of caution or misconduct, 44 of the killed and 378 ofthe injured were passengers, and mostly met with theirinjuries in entering, leaving the carriages, or falling be-tween trains and platforms. Seventy-four persons met their deaths at crossings,level or otherwise, while 33 others were injured at thosedangerous places; 117 trespassers were killed, and 33others committed suicide on the lines duiing 1 he six months. Taking the return as a whole, it is not one that redoundsto the credit of the railway companies, as it exhibits somany instances of their neglect to provide sound andproper materials and appliances, or to adopt the fullestpossible precautions to ensure immunity from accident to the public and their servants.—Raiizuay Herald, London.
