the competition he is forcedto encounter just as soon as home manufactories are estab-lished. Speaking of the American proposition to increase their rates ofduty under the tariff act of 1842, Mr. Bright said in a speech inthe English Parliament:America as an independent countryhas been a more valuable customer to England than she couldpossibly have been as a colony. On all the goods exported toAmerica during the last quarter of a century you have made anet profit of 40 per cent. The American manufacturers of cot-ton, wool and silk goods cleared a very small per cent, profit from1883 to 1888, and it is very questionable whether an annual profitof over ten per cent, is now possible in this country on anythoroughly established manufacture. In 1860 a square foot of plate-glass cost ^^2.50. A duty of about58 per cent, was placed on it by the tariff of 1861. A squarefoot of plate-glass can now be bought for ;^i.oo. The industryhas grown enormously and employs thousands of men at highwages.
