On the 29th of October, 1861, there sailed from HamptonRoads the most formidable squadron ever fitted out in Americanwaters—men-of-war commanded by Flag-Officer Samuel F. Du-Pont in the Wabash, and army transports with a force of twelvethousand men under General Thomas W. Sherman, bound forPort Royal Harbor, twentymiles north of the mouth ofthe Savannah River.
