In addition, on more than one occasion, valuable andgreatly needed medical and surgical supplies were capturedfrom the more bountifully supplied Northerners. Dr. J. B.Cowan, medical director of Forrests cavalry, stated to thewriter, that on one of Forrests raids into western Tennessee,they captured and brought out a large wagon train, in whichwere three four-nude army wagons loaded with medical sup-plies, the remainder of which, after supplying his commandvery bountifully, were forwarded to Atlanta, Georgia. Thevalue of that was estimated by Dr. George S. Blackie, medicalpurveyor there, to be fully equivalent to what would have costthe department at least one hundred and fifty thousand dollarsin gold.
