In the distance the first wave of British troops are shown advancing on the Germantrenches, while the second wave waits ready to follow closely behind the leaders. the enemy and killed 150. That closed thefighting for the year 1916. The result of the Sonuiie offensive of1916 was not fully seen until the springof 1917, when the enemy, fearful of freshallied attacks, evacuated the whole salientbetween the Oise and the Scarpe rivers andwithdrew to what was called the Hinden-burg line. This front ran in a fairlystraight north-and-south line from theregion of Soissons to tlie region of Arras.Its northern end rested on Vimy ridge,which was the northern pivotal point forthe German retirement.
