Gen. von Mackensen, fresh from suc-cesses against the Russians, was taken fromthe eastern front and placed in command ofa huge force. As he had depended upon apreponderance of heavy guns against theRussians, so did von Mackensen plan tocrush the foe in the Balkans. In October,1915, the invasion began. The Serbian bor-der was crossed and von Mackensens armypushed relentlessly on. His heavy gunsheld the Serbs at his mercy and tliey wereliterally blown out of their land.
