The story of the landing and the subse-quent lighting against the heaviest odds,the suffering from the sun as it beat dowjion the glistening sands, is one of the mostheroic chapters in British history. Buiafter their terrible suffering and theirdeeply felt losses, the troops were with-drawn from the peninsula less than eightmonths later and the spectacular cam-paign was written down as a completefiasco.
