Upon the sides, and in the vicinity, of the Hartz mountains,in Hanover, Germany, are extensive forests, which from theearliest time have been the haunts of the boar, the bear and thewolf. The chase of the former has always been preferred.Though much more dangerous, it is far more exciting and enno-bling. Princes, nobles and peasants have been enthusiastic inthis pursuit, and even at this day, the forest resounds with thehunters horn and the shouts of the conqueror. The full grownboar is ferocious and formidable. His strength is great, andhis terrible tusks threaten the dogs with certain death. Thelion, in the Indian jungle is scarcely more to be dreaded thanthe boar at bay. Upon a bright morning in the month of October, 17—, thebustle of preparation, was heard in the court-yard of the castleof Stolberg.
