(Coturnicops noveboracensis) In the southwestern part of BensonCounty., between the town of Esmondand the old Glacial River locallyknown as the big coulee, are to befound a number of wet, springy ormarshy tracts which are connectedwith the coulee by ravines or gullies.These ravines contain much of thissame wet springy ground. It was on one of these uplandmarshes, on June 14th, 1899, that Ifound my first nest of CoturnicopsNoveboracensis. The country at that time was newto me and I was tramping about justlooking for anything there was to befound, when I heard the sound ofeggs crushing underfoot. I lost notime in pulling away the dead grasswhich concealed the nest and foundone perfect egg and four smashedones. They were perfectly fresh. The nest was a thick, compact struc-ture of fine
