THE NUTRITION AND CARE OF CHILDREN IN A MOUNTAINCOUNTY OF KENTUCKY. INTRODUCTION. PURPOSE OF STUDY. This report covers the findings of the first nutrition survey under-taken by the Childrens Bureau in a rural district. Other ruralstudies have dealt with maternity and infant care, and the generalconditions surrounding young children/ and some of them have re-vealed data of interest in connection with the nutrition of children,but in none was nutrition the chief object of the investigation. Thestudy was made in a community in Kentucky in response to anappeal from the Kentucky State Board of Health to help find * whya State famous the world over for its prosperity should turn outso large a percentage of physically defective men as the draft recordsshowed. Its purjDose was to ascertain the physical condition ofchildren of selected ages and to discover, if possible, the chief factorsresponsible for the conditions found.
