. Beyond them on the edge of the wilderness, the AvengingAngel intercepted Satan before the eyes of Evangelist andDetermination. Eelentlessly and with vehement rage, theArchfiend strove to overpower his opponent, but in vain. Theclanking of chains was distinctly heard as the hand-to-handcombat continued. SATAN IS CAPTURED AND BOUND ^^Now, said Evangelist, ^Hhe chains are made secure; theAvenging Angel hath shackled the Enemy, and then the twoknelt at the foot of the Cross and offered praise to Jehovah. The Avenging Angel led forward his captive, while theother fiends in dismay and terror hurried toward the castle.Then the earth shivered as it was torn apart at Gods command,and I could see a deep and hideous pit, bottomless as viewed bymans eyes, into which Satan, with dreadful groaning andcurses, was cast; and where his chains were made secure. Abovehung an impenetrable cloud. ^It is too terrible to behold; my soul shudders at the sight,cried out Determination, as he covered his face.
