At this time the carpenter, who was theonly man of the crew who understood the art of navigatingthe vessel, was approached by one of the hands, with proposalsto mutiny, kill the officers, take possession of the vessel andher treasure, and, scuttling the former when they got near land,leaving her for the coast of Peru, there to enjoy in peacetheir ill-gotten booty. It appeared that they had doubted the carpenter, and hadleft him out of their counsels while the arrangement of thematter was pending. They now, only at the last moment pre-vious to the execution of their project, took him into theirconfidence, and presented to him the alternative to partake ofthe fate of the officers, or join them in good faith. Overcomeby surprise and tenor, he reluctantly submitted to become oneof them. But they did not trust him out of their sight again, andthai very night, in the mid-watch, while the ship was sailing alongwith a gentle breeze, their fell purpose was carried into effect.

THE MURDER. i 19 It was the mates watch on deck, and as he leaned drowsilyagainst the mizzenmast, he was approached from behind by -of the mutineers, who buried an axe in his head and left himfor dead. They now proceeded to get the captain out of hi-- cabin.Throwing- a large coil of rigging forcibly down on the poopdeck was the means resorted to to gain their purpi It succeeded, for scarce a minute had elapsed before tin- captainshead appeared above the companion slide, as he asked whatwas meant by such noise. He had hardly uttered the question,when a blow upon the head with an iron belaying pin silencedhim forever. The second mate was in like manner enticed ondeck and murdered. The mutineers had now possession of the vessel. Theymade haste to pitch overboard the bodies of the murderedofficers and clear away the gore which stained the deck, andthen consulted as to what was next to be done-. They con-cluded to alter their original plan, sail for the Gallapagos, andland there on one of
