Text Appearing After Image:
An example of detrimental overhead tapping(For the Brazilian Rubber Exposition) COLLECTING AND SMOKING RUBBER 53 takes a firm position, in front of the tree, ready tocut. First he examines the trunk to see where hecut the last time and he selects the area above thatplace for this days tapping. Then with the bladeof the axe he strikes one sharp blow, half-sidewise,at an upward angle, letting the stroke reach almostto the cambium, or formative layer, of the tree.Immediately afterward he sticks the tigelinha intothe bark imder the lower angle of the cut so thatthe slowly exuding milk can ooze down into it.He makes three or four of these gashes around thecircumference of the tree; if the tree is healthy andnot overtapped he gives it five to seven; but theprudent seringiieiro does not exceed five. Now, what has the rubber-worker just finisheddoing? He has severed numerous bundles ofvascular ducts which carry the latex through theouter cell layers of the tree, causing it to exude. This fluid
