After the libera-tion of Greece from the Turks a French exploring expeditionclosely investigated the place, and came to the conclusion thatamongst these ruins the remnants of the celebrated temple ofZeus Olympios were preserved; nay, it was even found possibleto form from these a sufficiently clear notion of the sacred edificewhich once enclosed the most sublime image of the father of thegods, the pride and joy of Greece.
