Text Appearing Before Image:
2 LIFE OF LEAKE him, prevented and perplexed him. His owncredit was all the means to procure him everythinghe wanted, and his reputation at stake for theevent. We have few such instances in the Englishhistory. We have hardly had an instance wherethe sea- and land-officers have agreed togetherin any expedition ; but none where an admiraland a general have agreed like the Prince andSir John; who sacrificed all private views andpassions, with a disinterested regard, and steadfastperseverance for the public good. No difficulties,no dangers, no fatigues, no advantages, no punc-tilios could disunite them. But they acted asby a sympathy of nature, arising from a likegenerosity and bravery of mind. It was this thatcrowned their endeavours with a glorious success, which will be remembered whilst Gibraltarremains a part of the British possessions ; andthat (it is to be hoped) will be as long as trade andnavigation continue to flourish, and the power ofthe British navy can maintain that conquest.
Text Appearing After Image:
To fare p. zj? (Vol. I) CHAPTER IX1 Transactions at Lisbon till the arrival of the Grand Fleet. Theyproceed with the King of Spain and land-forces to Barcelona, which is besieged and taken. Whereupon the fleet returnsto England, leaving Sir John with a squadron abroad. The vigorous defence of Gibraltar, as it obligedthe French and Spaniards to draw most of theirforces that way, gave the allies the opportunityin the spring campaign to take Valenza deAlcantara by storm, and Alburquerque by capi-tulation, within the compass of two months. Allthis while the Grand Fleet, with the Englishand Dutch recruits, were preparing in England tocome to Portugal under command of the Earl ofPeterborough * and Sir Clowdisley Shovell, whohad been appointed Joint Admiral of the fleet forthat purpose 2; and they sailed from Spitheadthe 24th of May. What could induce our ministersto put a landsman (I wont say a soldier) inconjunction with the Admiral in chief to commandthe fleet, is not very easy to determin
