d Lycao-nia; but a sharp contention between Paul and Barnabas led to a separation of thefellow travellers, and this, by dividing their energies, contributed essentially to themore rapid progress of the Gospel. Barnabas was for taking his cousin Mark withthem, as before; but Paul could not forget Marks desertion of them at Perga, andabsolutely refused to commit the success of their enterprise to one so infirm ofpurpose. Barnabas was no less resolute the other way; and eventually the twoApostles agreed to pursue different tracks, each with the companion of his choice.Barnabas chose Mark, and Paul selected Silas, or Sylvanus, whose eminentqualifications as a preacher pointed him out as a suitable instrument. Silas, likePaul, was both a Jeiv and a Roman—so at least we should infer from what afterwardsoccurred at Philippi, where the charge against Paul and Silas before the magistrates (ifrd Tivas rjfiipas.
