As an intelligentanimal, he ranks next in the scale to the dog, that other com-panion and friend of man. Taking into consideration, then,his usefulness, his attractive appearance, and his intelligence,what is known of his history cannot prove unacceptable.2 (11) 18 HISTORY OF THE HORSE. In order to ascertain the special land which can claim theproud honor of being the parent country, the birth-place of thisnoble animal, recourse must be had primarily to the pages ofScripture, as being the most ancient and best authenticated ofall existing histories.
