PLIMPTON In treating of the history and use of the hornbookin America, it is necessary first to study the historyof the hornbook in the old world. The hornbook,in point of fact is not a book at all. Originally itwas a piece of board with a handle shaped like thebattledore in the old game of battledore and shuttle-cock. On the face of the hornbook was either a pieceof vellum or paper upon which the lesson was in-scribed. This was protected by a sheet of translucenthorn. This protection was of course necessary tokeep the lesson from the possible stain of a pair ofdirty little hands, as the hornbook was passed aboutfrom child to child. This hornbook of the seventeenthcentury is an excellent example (Figure 1). Ithas first the cross, then the alphabet in small letters,the vowels, and then the capitals.
