Nazareth has experienced many vicissitudes, and the tempestsof war have often broken into this secluded valley; so much sothat not one stone of the town known to our Lord remains to-day.Until the time of Constantine it continued to be a Jewish town,but later a splendid Basilica was built on the spot where theAngel appeared to Mary, and the house where Mary dweltwould have been known to generations of Jews, partly becauseof their hatred of the Christians, and also owing to the venerationof the Christians for these sacred places. The VenerableBede tells of Nazareth in his treatise. Liber nominum locorum exActis : Nazareth is a little village not far from Mount Tabor;it is from it that our Saviour was called a Nazarite. A churchstands where the angel entered to announce to Mary the greatnews, and another on the spot where our Lord was brought up. 1 St. John i. 46. « St. Matthew ii. 23.

On Tancred taking possessionof Gahlee after the conquest of Jerusalem by the Crusaders, theBasilica was rebuilt and used as a cathedral, but in 1187,after the battle of Hattin, the Christians were driven out.
