CHAPTER IV BONAPARTE AS FIRST CONSUL FOR the first decade of the nineteenth century therewas but one important source of caricature, andone all-important subject — England and Bona-parte. America at this time counted for little in internationalpolitics. The revolutionary period closed definitely with thedeath of Washington, the one figure in our national politicswho stood for something definite in the eyes of Europe. Ourincipient naval war with France, which for a moment threat-ened to assign us a part in the general struggle of the Powers,was amicably concluded before the close of the eighteenthcentury. Throughout the Jeffersonian period, national andlocal satire and burlesque flourished, atoning in quantity forwhat it lacked in wit and artistic skill. Mr. Parton, in his Caricature and Other Comic Art, finds but one cartoonwhich he thinks it worth while to cite—Jefferson kneeling be-fore a pillar labeled Altar of Gallic Despotism, uponwhich are Paines Age of Reason, and the works
