crush out betweentwo and three millions of Protestants, nearly every one of whomwas ready to go to the stake in defence of his faith. In someof the provinces the Protestants were in so large a majority, and were organized under such able military leaders, that theking was unable to enforce with any efficiency his sanguinarycode. In contemplation of such scenes of fanaticism and suffering, one is led to inquire if Christianity has, on the whole, proveda blessing to mankind. But let it be remembered, that assecular history is mainly occupied with a record of the warsand the woes of humanity, while years of tranquillity and peacehave no annalists; so historians of the Church have been mainlyoccupied with the corruptions which human depravity haveintroduced into the pure, simple, and beneficent principles ofthe religion of Jesus. But there is little to be recorded ofthe millions upon millions of Christians in private life, wlio, 1 History of the Protestants in France, by Prof. G. de Felice.

EI4R1E1\TT CLERGY OF THE 18^ CElxTTUPCT THE CnURCJI IN MODERN TIMES. 475 from j^outh to old age, have had their hearts purified, theirmannera softened, their homes cheered and blessed, by thosequiet virtues which their faith has inculcated. Every joy oftheir lives has been magnified, and every grief solaced,- bytheir piety. They have fallen asleep in Jesus, triumphant over death andthe grave, and are now with angel-companions in the paradiseof God. No man can estimate the multitude of these redeemedones : their number is ^ten thousand times ten thousand, andthousands of thousands. And now, to use the glowing lan-guage of inspiration, — ^ Are they before the throne of God, and serve him day andnight in his temple; and He that sitteth on the throne shalldwell among them. They shall hunger no more, neither thirstany more ; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat:for the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feedthem, and shall lead them unto living fountains of water
