Theabbey was situated on the Beaulieu river, a waterway tothe sea which afforded an excellent opportunity for bargesto carry off the stones quarried out of the dismantledwalls and convey them to where they would be useful forsome building or other. It used to be said that muchof the material was taken to raise forts for the defence ofthe coast in this part of the country, and people werewont to point to Calshot Castle in particular, as beingable to account for a good deal of the Beaulieu Abbeybuildings in its foundations. But to go back to the story of this Cistercian house.On Its first establishment by King John in 1204, it wascolonized by Citeaux itself. The royal charter speaks ofit as being intended for thirty monks, but apparentlytwenty-two only came to settle in the place chosen, andwhich from its beautiful surroundings and royal founderwas at once called Royal Beaulieu—Abbatia de Bella-loco Regis, A legend is connected with the foundation. BEAULIEU abbey: DOOR OF THE ABBEY CHURCH BEAULIEU It is said that King John treated the Cistercians in Eng-land in no better way than he did his other subjects. Onthe occasion of one special demand for a large subsidythe abbots of the Order journeyed to Lincoln to see theKing in person and to expostulate with him. John wasin no amiable frame of mind, and on seeing the abbotsand hearing what their mission was he ordered hismounted men to ride them down with their horses— anunjust, wicked and unheard-of order for any Christianman to give, says the chronicler. Of course the Kingsservants refused to use them thus and even took the abbotsto their own lodgings. But this was not to be the end ofthe matter: according to the writer of the narrative, thefollowing night, when King John had retired to bed, hesaw in a vision or dreamt that he saw, the Judgment Seatset up and himself brought by the abbots before it forcondemnation.
