Text Appearing Before Image:
scifrons was named by Mr. W. T. Blanford in 1873 on theevidence of a female head obtained by the late Sir O. B. St. John at Jalk, inNorthern Baluchistan. Its chief claims to distinction are that the horns, which measured y^ inches in length, are distinctly, although not veryprominently ridged, or ringed, and that the darker portions of the face aredark brown, instead of rufous. When the male was subsequently discovered,it was found not to differ perceptibly from the ordinary Indian chinkara, except that the horns are a little more curved backwards, and slightly morelyrate when viewed from the front. From Baluchistan the chinkaraextends to the head of the Persian Gulf in the neighbourhood ot Bushire. There it inhabits the low country, as it does in Baluchistan, not rangingabove the 3000 feet level, where it is replaced by the goitred gazelle, which can be easily recognised, even at a comparatively long distance, byits much lighter colour. From the other representatives of the typical ruminants the greatmajority of the members of the deer tribe are distinguished by the cranialappendages of the males taking the form of antlers, v^rhich are periodicallyshed and again renewed, and in all the Asiatic forms are more or lessbranched. In none of the deer with which we have to deal in the presentvolume are the females, or hinds, normally provided with antlers : and in thefew species in which these appendages are lacking in both sexes, the malesare provided with long sabre-like tusks in the upper jaw projecting belowthe margin of the lip. In the latter respect these uncrowned speciesresemble the chevrotai
