e still remaining,are a crypt, or vault, of early pointed architecture, andthe chapel, a large and lofty building of a somewhatlater date. It is to be lamented that this latter, oneof the most spacious private chapels in the county,should be mulcted of a moiety of its proportions by abrick wall across its centre. Within the chapel area few family monuments, and a genealogical escut-cheon in carved oak. There are also some remainsof armorial bearings on the windows, viz. Babingtonquartering Beaumont, with the ancient crest of thelatter, an Elephant.* In the hall are some pieces ofancient armour, back and breast plates, and morions,probably of the date of the civil Avars, in which thefamily espoused the cause of the Parliament.
