At the presenttime there is a great falling off, and its practical exhaustionseems near at hand. The Corsicana oil field is probably next in importance.Petroleum was first discovered here in 1894 while drillingfor water. In 1896 it was found to exist in sufficientquantity for shipment and refinement. Since that timethe production of oil has been steadily carried on. Cor-sicana has a refinery, and a second is located at Powell, eight miles to the east. Valuable flows of oil have also been developed in Hardincounty at Sourlake (Fig. 76), Saratoga, and Batson and inHarris county at Humble. Oil in smaller quantities hasbeen encountered in Nacogdoches county, southeast of thetown of Nacogdoches, and in Bexar, Travis, Clay, andBrown counties. 78. Asphaltum (Mineral Pitch).
