ch follow a probable former channel ofAlameda Creek. These fields looked even bet-ter than some of the irrigated ones andsix crops had been cut on many of themthis season. However, gophers are destroyingso many of the plants that many of the far-mers talk of irrigating for the sole purposeof destroying these and other rodents. Thelimits of this strip of land are well defined bythe growth of the alfalfa, as inside the limitsthe plants are a bright, healthy green andvigorous, while outside they are stunted and dry. Eucalyptus. The one grove already mentioned, on the C. H.Patterson land, has received no irrigation sinceplanting. The ground between the young treesis kept in a high state of tillage, as in an orch-ard, and apparently this is maintained until thetrees become too large. Grain and Hay. These crops are obviously not irrigated and itis a matter of only a short time when large fieldsof cereals will give way on these and similarhigh priced lands to crops of higher productivevalue.

274 IS TIDE LAND RECLAMATION FEASIBLE? 275 Tide Lands. As one of the Citys Engineers in his reportrefers to tide lands and their reclamation hyirrigation, the writer took occasion to visit thesetide lands between Alvarado and Newark, al-though outside of the Niles Cone. The owner-ship of the larger part of these tide lands isheld by large corporations and they are usedfor the production of salt and show that this isand will be their most valued product. Over10,000 acres between Alameda Creek and New-ark Slough belong to three salt companies ortheir associates, and it is unlikely that thereclamation of these tide lands will take placeas long as these lands can be used for the pro-duction of salt. On Page 204 of the Freeman Report it isasserted that about 1500 acres of tide lands havebeen reclaimed to date in his grossly exagger-ated boundaries of the Niles Cone, giving theimpression that these lands were similar tothose shown in the panorama view (Plate page260).
