The land forces of the enemyattacked General Williams at 4 oclock in the morning, and were repulsed as soon asPorters gunboats could shell them from the river. While leading his men General Williams was shot through the heart. The gun-boats, in order to reach the enemy, had to fire over the town, their shots beingdirected by a signal officer stationed on top of the State House. As soon as the enemy were driven off, Commander Porter, with the Essex, Cayugaand Sumter, started up the river to look after the Arkansas, which had not madeher appearance below in consequence of an injury to one of her engines. As soon as Porter got sight of her he opened fire with incendiary shells, and intwenty minutes she was discovered to be in flames. The crew backed her ashore andgot a line out, which soon burnt off, and she swung into the river, where she con-tinued to burn until she blew up with a tremendous explosion.
