| Description |
English: The eve of the battle of Naseby 1645 the Naseby table This is the inn table at which some of King Charles rearguard were sitting having supper and playing quoits in the small village of Naseby on the evening before the battle. They were surprised by Roundhead cavalry under Colonel Henry Ireton who quickly broke up their supper. This skirmish helped influence the King, six miles away to the north at Market Harborough, to turn and bring the Parliamentary army to battle on the following day 14th June 1645. Reference to this initial skirmish and, below it, an early photo of the table is at http://www.naseby.com/thebattle/nasebycampaign.html
The table is now in use in All Saints Church, Naseby, where it is referred to as Cromwells table. A sword and stirrup from that skirmish used to hang on the north wall nearby. The inn from which the table comes was just across the road from the church, the forerunner of the present Shuckburgh House. |
