The Temple and the Grave.—^The most famoustemple in the empire is that of Confucius in his nativecity of Kewfoo, in the province of Shantung, about onehundred miles south of Chenanfoo. Within this sacredenclosure is the stump of the old tree the sage plantedwith his own hand, the well from which he drank, anda pavilion on the spot where his school-house stood,where were educated the philosophers of China. The grave is a mile from the city, and the broad pavedavenue has rows of magnificent trees on each side.
