the fascia is quite flat; and if the urethra be cut across close to it, the aperturewill be found barely sufficient to transmit it. But if the penis be drawn obliquelyupwards, the fascia is rendered tense and convex forwards, by means of the trac-tion exerted on it through the medium of its tubular prolongation. Should theexperiment be then made of cutting off the urethra close to the fascia, the fora-men will be found much wider, for the tube had been previously rendered, as itwere, trumpet-shaped, and so it will be when the urethra is rendered tense, during the introduction of the catheter. — Quams Elements of Anatomy, p. 556. 17 194 THE DISSECTOR S GUIDE. union with the sacrum. The vesica urinaria, or bladder of urine, is a large sac, situated iuthe pelvis, in the bottom of the hypogastric region. It is placed in thefore part of the pelvis, behind the pubis, and before the upper, andabove the under portion of the rectum. When empty, it is contractedinto a small size, which occupies the under and fore part of the pelvis; THE DISSECTORS GUIDE. 195 but, when fully distended, it rises above the brim of that cavity, andsometimes ascends to within a little distance of the umbilicus. Whenmoderately dilated, it is of a roundish or irregular oblong form, but alittle flattened before, more convex behind, and broader at its anteriorand pos
