Its main claim to thisdistinction is the possession of the famous Maidanor Esplanade, which runs along the Hoogly riverfor nearly two miles and which far surpasses theLuneta of Manila in picturesqueness. The Maidanis three-quarters of a mile wide at its beginning andit broadens out to one and one-quarter miles in widthat its lower end.
