That the warping of the Aus-tralian and Tasmania peneplain was chiefly Post Miocene is proved by thelocally folded and uplifted Lower Miocene beds in the Mount Lofty Ranges,near Adelaide. Also the latest great outburst of volcanic energy in all theStates of the Commonwealth (except Northern Territory) took place in PostMiocene time. Moreover the glaciation of the Tasmanian highlands andthose of south-east Australia, took place in late Pliocene or Pleistocenetime, and these glaciations were almost certainly contemporaneous withaccentuated crust warping, though it is not intended to suggest that therewas necessarily a causal connexion between the two phenomena, thoughthere possibly may have been. Next the existence of abundant remainsof large herds of Pliocene or Pleistocene marsupials, some of elephantineproportions, in what are now low-lying arid regions, with the discovery ofremains of the late Pliocene or Pleistocene crocodile Pallimnarchus pollens, 353
