Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Church of SS Mary and Margaret, Sprowston, Norfolk, monumental brass of the lawyer John Corbet (1514-1559), twice MP for the City of Norwich and Recorder of Norwich, in Norfolk, and his wife Jane Berney, a daughter of Ralph Berney, Esquire. He was from a junior branch of the ancient Marcher Lord family of Corbet of Caus Castle in Shropshire. He was the son of John Corbet (d.1540s), Gentleman, of Spixworth, Sheriff of the City of Norwich, a brazier at Norwich. (Sources: History of Parliament biography [1]; Blomefield, History of Norfolk, vol 10, 458-460)

The brass shows his four sons and five daughters kneeling between their parents. Upper half of his body missing, but drawn complete by Cotman, early 19th c. One replaced shield. (source: Monumental Brass Society [2])

His eldest son and heir was Sir Miles Corbet (d.1607) whose mural monument with kneeling effigy survives in the same church. Also surviving is the monument to the latter's son Sir Thomas Corbet (d.1617) with recumbent effigies of himself and his wife. Also a tablet/cenotaph monument to Sir John Corbet, Baronet (d.1627) who was buried in St Margaret's Church, Westminster.
