Conformation.— The Tortoise-shell is rathera smaUish cat; but allowance must be madefor the fact that the immense majority of Tor-toise-shells are females, which in all the cat fam-ilies are smaller than the nuiles. The bodiesare rather long, giving the animal the gracefulturn of the tiger oi* leopaid. Tail. —The tail is long, thick at the base,tapers toward the end, and has an upwardcurve. Patches of color on the tail should beas distinct as they are on the body. Coat—Color and Quality. —The Tortoise- 48 THE CAT sliell in color is black, red, and yellow; the lessblack the better.
