the inside ofthe thighs, the under surface of the belly, andeven, in extreme cases, over almost the entirebody. The itchiness produced by the mangecauses the animal to scratch and rub itself, which further irritates the skin, producingabrasions w^hich scab over; and as the scabsare in turn scratched off, they leave irritating,1)1 ceding, and ugly ulcers. In severe cases theconstant irritation and w^orry to the animalcause it to lose its appetite, and it may becomeexcessively debilitated and emaciated. Thecause and effect then become retroactive, asthe mange will extend more rapidly on a debil-itated animalj and the increase of the mangeincreases the debility. There are a great many remedies for themange, and it is not so much the choice of the DISEASES OF CATS 113 remedy to be used as the manner of its applica-tion which is efficacious. One of the simplestmodes of treatment is sulphur ointment. Onedram of flowers of sulphur to the ounce ofpure lard should be well rubl^ed into the skin

The skin should then bewell sponged off with a little soap and tepidwater, and allowed to remain clean for a dayor two. The body should then be well brushedwith a moderately stiff brush, which will re-move any scabs on the skin, when the ointmentis to be reapplied for several days. A mixture 114 THE CAT of one part of coal-tar, one part of oil of cade, and six or eight parts of benzine is an excellentremedy, altliongli less cleanly. It slioiild beapplied witli a moderately stiff Ijrusli daily forfonr days in snccession, when the animal shonldbe sponged off with tepid water and soap, andat the end of two days the application renewed. If the animal is mnch debilitated it can be pnton a tonic treatment of one grain of cpiinine inthirty drops of whisky three times in the day,or npon teaspoonfnl doses of a mixtnre of equalparts of s;yinp of wild-cherry bark and Hux-hams tinct
