The course of the vessel lay through theMolokai Channel, leaving Molokai Island on the left, and huggingclosely against the surf-beaten shores of Oahu, on which the capital,Honolulu, is situated. Kear the water there were occasional groves ofcocoanut - trees; but on the wholethe shore was less tropical in ap-pearance than our young friendshad expected to find it. Every eye was straining to catcha view of Honolulu; but when itsposition was pointed out most ofthe passengers were unable to dis-cover any marked indications of the ™e island of oahu.presence of a town. After a time the steamer made a sharp turn to the starboard, and passed through thenarrow channel which leads into the pretty harbor of Honolulu. growths in rich profu-sion. The harbor is adeep basin in a coral reef,and so perfectly land-locked that it is ordina-rily as smooth as a mill-pond, and is safe in allwinds that blow. Thereis good anchorage forships, and when the Ala-meda entered there wasa fleet of sufficient sizein the port to give it avery prosperous appear-ance. Numerous smallboats were darting about,and almost before the en-gines were stopped thelittle craft swarmed ingreat force about thesteamer. Back of Honolulu risesa series of volcanic mount-ains three or four thou-sand feet high, and fromthe town itself to the footof these mountains theground rises in a gentleslope, so that the viewfrom the harbor is an ex-cellent one. Doctor Bron-son called the attentionof the youths to a val-ley opening through themountains, and to thecontrast between thecliffs and slopes, and thebright waters immediate-ly around them.
