P. for Richard ORNAMENTATION WITHOUT GOLD. 193 Pynson, and so on; but it is probable, anyhow, thatalthough panel stamps of English design bearing theseinitials were used here, they were largely of foreign,probably Nether-landish, orighi. In the early six-teenth century inEngland, heraldrywas an importantscience, and beganto show itself asa fertile source ofornamentation ofbindings. Many ofthe panel stampsof the early Tudorperiod are heraldic.The most interest-ing of these stampsis one which isfound in combina-tion with severalothers; it seemsto be a sort ofbackbone. Thedesign consists of a large Tudor rose, partly enclosed byribbon on which is the legend hec rosa virtutis deCCELO :\rissA sereno eternum florens regia sceptra FERET.
