moustaches, after the fashion of that in the middleof the upper border of the head plate in the Duston fibulaPI. lxvi, 3. The middle part of the plate just above the bow,in No. 2, has a panel of scroll work, and between this and theborder there is the characteristic beast ornament. Starting fromthe left hand bottom corner we see the round dot markingthe creatures eye and above it lines indicating the brow. Thethree vertical strokes above and at right angles to these standfor the neck, and just to the right of these there are other threelines that probably should mark the junction of the forelegwith the body, while the foreleg with its double knee bringsthe foot up close under the chin. Horizontal lines furtherup seem to indicate the junction of the hind leg that fills upthe corner. The space in the horizontal part of the panelbetween the forms just indicated and the middle of the headplate shows us, apparently unconnected, an eye with two jaws 1 Leicester, i, 238. ORNATE SQUARE-HEADED FIBULAE 339 pointing towards the middle, an eye alone, and a bent leg andclaw. With a little ingenuity the animals on the foot of thebrooch can be more or less made out. The second point of interest about the piece is a certainplastic feeling of which it gives evidence. Studs project fromthe side discs of the foot and from the two upper corners ofthe head nondescript creatures like couchant lions. This isimportant in view of the remark, a perfectly true one, byHaakon Schetelig* to the effect that the Anglo-Saxon crafts-man worked for an effect of flatness, whereas his Norwegiancontemporary showed a predilection for boldness of relief.Most of the florid square headed and cruciform fibulae aremarkedly flat, but on the other hand some latish, if not late,pieces are effective in their relief. This is true not only ofthe Northampton specimen but of the three interestingAlfriston square headed brooches shown PI. lxvii, whichmay be dated in the latter part of VI. When we
