ory of the type is concerned chieflywith the enlargement and treatment of this square head-plateand the relations between it and the coil with its knobs below.This history has been worked out in an elaborate little treatiseby Dr. Haakon Schetelig of the Bergen Museum in Norway,1which has established for our present state of knowledge thechronology of the various forms involved. The origin of thespecial type is claimed for the Lower Elbe region and Schleswig,but the development is worked out in Denmark, Norway andSweden, and England, and the relations among the formsfound in the three countries are set forth with great lucidityand convincingness in the treatise. Thetype originated in IV for specimens like Fig. 12 were foundin the Nydam moss in Schleswig. It was carried through itsmain typological changes in the course of V and lasted on inuse at any rate in England to the latter part of VI and eveninto VII. It is noteworthy that all through V in Denmarkand in England it was usual for the side knobs still to belongessentially to the coil and only to be attached as separatepieces to the head plate as is the case with all the fibulae onPL xli, while in Norway and Sweden they were already cast inthe same piece with the head plate.
