This post is 1 ft. 8 in. high and 9 in.square at the base and is placed in the Museum in the positionit occupied at the head of the coffin, as if to serve as a markor memorial. In the dearth of such memorials in Anglo-Saxon cemeteries it is an exhibit of importance. There is a difference here between England and theContinent that is of some significance. INSCRIBED TOMBSTONES 181 date, that bear Christian symbols but were found markinggraves supplied in pagan fashion with tomb furniture. Theinscriptions on these are in Latin. Many of these Rhinelandcemeteries are in the neighbourhood of Worms, where thecontinuity of Latin and Teutonic civilization is evidenced bythe free use on the part of the conquerors of the older Romangraveyards. In England early inscribed Germanic tombstonesdo occur, as at Hartlepool and Monkwearmouth, but they arein monastic cemeteries not in those of Roman or of paganorigin and associations. In general the use of the Latinlanguage in Anglo-Saxon England is due to the direct agencyof the Church, whereas in the Rhineland and Gaul Latin ismore freely used in secular connections and must have beenmore commonly understood.
