use ofthese is a distinctly early symptom and they are of greaterchronological value than the motives hitherto discussed. Aclass of objects on which these motives are specially in evidenceis that of the saucer and applied fibulae the origin and mor-phology of which have already been discussed (p. 275 f.).This particular product we have seen to be essentially English(p. 277). Its distribution in England is a matter of muchinterest. It used to be considered specially West Saxon, butMr. Leeds in the paper already referred to (ibid.) found nodifficulty in widening greatly the limits of its provenance, andin showing that it was as much at home in Anglian surround-ings in Cambridgeshire as in its supposed native haunts in theupper valley of the Thames. It can even be found widerafield than was admitted in his paper of 1912. He notesexamples from the West Saxon counties of Berks, Bucks,Oxon, Hants, Wilts, Gloster, Worcester ; from Surrey, Kent, LVII facing p. 313 APPLIED AND SAUCER BROOCHES

To these counties may be addedEssex, for two good examples of the applied kind were foundin Barrow Field, Kelvedon, near Colchester, and are now, withothers that have lost their plates, in the Museum of that City.Though not an exclusive West Saxon speciality the saucer andapplied brooch is yet in the main confined to the southernMidland districts, with the addition of Sussex the inhabitantsof which seem to have had a liking for it. The Yorkshireexample, apparently the base of an applied brooch that haslost its plate,1 is not very certain. Only one occurred inLincolnshire, and that at the south-western extremity of thecounty nearest the Midlands, while there are none noted fromNotts, Stafford, and Derby. East Anglia only furnishes one,
