Text Appearing Before Image:
within the Taplow Barrow. This isone of a pair, and from the size and shape of the two and theirposition in the grave they appear to have fastened the belt. The colour plate, PI. B, iv (p. 353), on the left, gives the objectas it appears in the British Museum and PL lxxvii, 2, showsthe ornament nearly of the natural size. The heads of thecreatures on the loop of the clasp are of a characteristic typewhich is also represented on the exquisite little golden bucklefrom Faversham, also in the national collection illustrated inits natural colour, PL B, iv, above in the middle. Dr. Salinsignalizes this head as characteristic of his Style 11 and woulddate it not far from the year 600 which is the official dategiven for the Taplow find. It will be observed, as accordingwith what was said before (p. 329 f.), that the interlacing motiveis highly developed both on the ring and in the triangularspaces of the plates. See also (p. 289). We come now to the smaller clasps so often found at the LXXVIII
Text Appearing After Image:
All approximately natural size SMALL CLASPS FOR THE WRIST 363 wrists of skeletons. These occur abundantly in the easternMidlands in the counties of Lincolnshire, Rutland, Northants,Huntingdon, Cambridge, and north-western SufFolk ; and havecome to light also in Norfolk, Leicestershire, the north-eastcorner of Warwickshire, Hunts, and probably Bedfordshire, and also in Yorkshire. Two clasps from Bifrons, Kent, andone part of one at Lewes from Sussex are sporadic. Theclasps vary from very plain examples in beaten work tospecimens cast, chased, and gilded in the best style of thetimes. PI. lxxviii, 1 to 9, and PI. lxxvii, 4, 5, give a fair ideaof the different kinds. PI. lxxviii, 1, is a verv plain one fromnear Welbourn, Lincolnshire ; No. 2, in tinned bronze, i-§ in.high, is from Holdenby, Northants, in Northampton Museum ;No. 3 is from Rothley Temple, Leicestershire, in the SchoolMuseum, Rugby. More ornate and of cast bronze is the pairfrom Londesborough, Yorks, in the Museum at Hull,
