Text Appearing Before Image:
uld be noted, is of silvered bronzenot like the others of silver. It measures in diameter iT9^ in.and is ornamented with simple linear punched designs. Penannular and annular brooches are comprised in thelast set of fibulae with which we have to deal. Only thesecond kind is represented in the Bifrons collection,1 seePI. xxxvi, 2, 3, 4, 9, 11, 13. The archaeology of themopens up some interesting questions into which it is notpossible to enter at any length in this place, and as the pen-annular brooch belongs rather to the Viking age than to thatof the pagan tomb furniture there will be a suitable opportunityfor discussing it afterwards in this connection. Thesebrooches correspond in their manner of use to the two kindsof quoit brooch, the closed and the open, just passed in review, 1 See however the remark made previously (p. 247 note2) about apossible penannular example, that is figured and discussed later on underthe rubric bracelet (p. 445 f.). L facing p. 285 NON-SAXON RING FIBULAE
Text Appearing After Image:
PENANNULAR BROOCHES 285 and the construction of PL xlix, i and 2 seems to show thatthe ring brooches are prior to those in the quoit form, for wesee in both the Sarre and the Alfriston examples a penannularring brooch added to the quoit-shaped plate in order to securethe easy lateral movement of the pin. In the various speciesof fibulae we see constantly at work the desire to secureadditional space for the display of ornament, and it is probablethat the quoit form is merely a ring flattened out with thisend in view. Its pin arrangement connects it with the ringrather than with the disc type of fibula, though as we haveseen its ornamentation resembles that of some of the discs. Some ring brooches are partly flattened out and seem to re-present a transitional stage. This is the case with PI. li, 4,1 7. Both penannular and annular brooches are prior to themigration period and the Teutons took them over from theRomans and the Celts. A Romano-British example of theformer kind from Ham Hill,
