rtrait made directly from life.Of all the portraits extant the Droeshout print seemed to me the only representation oi a living per-sonality. The others might have been imagined orconcocted. So I followed it scrupulously, avoiding the conventionally graceful pose, in a graceful cos-tume, and the vague head, usually adopted in statues of Shakespeare, 11 1 was much gratified recently to learn that theoriginal painted portrait, which 1 thought had ex-isted, had come to light in England, a few yearsago, and had been accepted by able specialists On thesubject, U the authentic and true likeness ^i Shake speare. To me the less romantic and beautiful Droeshout portrait is far more convincing. It has a quaint charm, a Strong personal character which the otherlacks. It is a portrait of a man of the world, a sym-pathetic observer of life, and is far more suggest-of the great dramatist and thinker than theChandOS dandy, with flowing mustaches and1 card.
