Sarto in thePitti; but this. Number 124, above the door leadingto the next hall, is by far the best. The picture waspainted for the monks of San Gallo, and hung fora time in their church outside the Porta San Gallo.It was removed to San Jacopo Tra Fossi, and wasthen purchased in 1626 by the Duchess Maria Ma-dellena of Austria, and hung in the chapel of thePitti. It is on a wooden panel. At the left standsthe Virgin, with an expression of surprise, hesita-tion, and submission; she wears a dull red robe anda blue mantle. At the right the Angel Gabrielkneels, with a lily in his left hand; there are twocharming angels behind him, the painting of whoseheads is especially delicate. There is a slight hazewhich suggests that they belong to another world.The background of this picture is famous. Thescene is depicted as taking place in the open air,in a beautiful garden, and a chaste Renaissancehouse is seen at the left. ANNUNCIATIONBy Andrea del Sarto •, in the Hall of Jupiter Ube fjall of Jupitct 153 several persons are gathered. On the steps whichlead to the portico a youth is resting, and an ex-quisite landscape shows beyond, while through theopen arches of the portico may be seen a picturesqueruin. Mary has risen from a little prie dieu, uponwhich is an inscription. It may be thus translated: Andrea del Sarto has painted thee here as he car-ries thee in his heart; and not such as thou art,Marie, to thy glory rather than to his renown. Garofolo has painted a striking picture of Au-gustus and the Sibyl. The legend, as most of ushave heard, is an ancient one. The Emperor Au-gustus Caesar visited the Tiburtine Sibyl to ask herto answer his question whether he ought to allowhis people to worship him as a god, and to receivedivine honours, as the Senate had decreed. TheSibyl replied by causing a cleft in the clouds abovean altar; there, enthroned, were the Madonna andChild, while a voice was heard ch
