table with the Holy Child, while through a doorat the back the domestic sights of the kitchen arevisible. On the floor, little St. John stands, orrather runs, his arms full of tiny puppies, whilethe mother dog behind him is chasing him for havingtaken away her young ones. At the left, St. Eliz-abeth is seated, spinning. She and the others arelaughing, much amused at the incident. Next to this occurs Cigolis St. Francis, quitea familiar subject and well painted. The scene isan outdoor one, with the saint clad in his brownhabit in an attitude of ecstasy, kneeling before acrucifix. In the background may be seen the con-vent of La Vernia. The face and hands are beau-tifully rendered, and the whole tone and manner ofthe painting restful and devotional. The Young Bacchus, by Guido Reni, is a morecheerful subject. This is a bright, laughing face,in contrast with much of this artists work. GuidoReni does not often choose a pagan subject; whenhe makes such a selection, he does it full justice.

A little attendant carries a large jug, evidently prepared to fill up the cup when it needsto be replenished. On both childish faces is anexpression of enjoyment. Although the face ofBacchus is that of a child, Guido has succeeded ininfusing into the youthful mirth of his smile a cer-tain flavour of worldliness, such as one sometimessees in the face of a street urchin who has had toturn his wits to his own support early in life. The painting of the detail of the picture is mostexquisite, notably the treatment of the grape-vine,which is entwined around the head of the youngdeity. The leaves are just at the point of wiltinga little, as they would do in contact with the warmlittle person. Young Bacchus is a genuine rogue, with all the fascination of a pretty, mischievouschild. Number 49 is a most engaging
