The child, — the first Age of Man, — seen inthree-quarter face, and dressed in brown and red,is a typical Italian boy of the rich blond colouringof the Lagoons. The straying locks of his hair,through which the light falls with such inimitablecharm, suggest the carelessness of early youth asto the conventional arrangement oi personal ap-pearance, as does also the cap \yhich is slouched onhurriedly. He holds and studies a sheet of music,— the mystery and the joy of this subtle art claim-ing more of his thought than dress. His gaze atthe music is not that of comprehension, but of ex-amination; the scroll of life is unrolling beforehim by degrees. Hisexpression, while earnest, is hopeful, buoyant, andhealthy; the picture is full of optimism up to thispoint. The green tunic, with its chaste and well-disposed trimming, betokens the dawn of self-con-sciousness. No scheme of colour could have beenchosen better to display his mature beauty. The old man on the left looks over his shoulder,possibly symbolizing retrospect. The delightfulcolour-scheme of the picture is completed by hisred robe. His face, while bearing the marks ofage and experience, is not unamiable or cruel; thelarge ear usually said to denote a generous tempera-ment is much in evidence.
