Description

Sakharov Prize. Uyghur scholar and human rights activist Ilham Tohti, currently imprisoned for life in China, will be awarded the 2019 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought by EP President Sassoli.

Summit. MEPs will discuss with European Council President Charles Michel and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen the results of the 12-13 December meeting of EU heads of state or government, where leaders discussed climate change, the EU’s long-term budget, Brexit, the Economic and Monetary Union, foreign relations and the future of Europe.

Lisbon Treaty. MEPs will celebrate 10 years of the Lisbon Treaty and the Charter of Fundamental Rights, the key reforms that enhanced democracy and strengthened Parliament, while expanding European citizens’ rights.

Ombudsman. Parliament will elect the European Ombudsman for a five-year mandate.

Malta. MEPs will discuss the investigation into Daphne Caruana Galizia’s murder, the journalist and writer killed in 2017, and the political turmoil in Malta.

Discrimination against LGBTI people.

Misuse of EU funds.

Bees. MEPs are expected to push for a further reduction in pesticide use, more funds for research and better monitoring in order to save pollinators such as bees, butterflies and other insects.
