On these dunes we discovered someof our most exciting flora and avi-fauna, the latter included the southernscrub-robin (Drymodes brunneo-pygia), the shy heath wren (Hylacolacauta), the superb blue wren (Malu- rus cyaneus) and the purple backedwren (Malurus assimilis). Also thetawny-crowned and the white-frontedhoneyeaters, and very numerousyellow-winged honeyeaters. In conjunction with brown stringybark (Eucalyptus baxterii), there wereseveral mallees, the yellow (E. incras-sata), the green (E. viridis) and thenarrow-leaf red (E. foecunda). Wealso discovered patches of bull mallee(E. behriana) and dumosa. The palegreen foHage of the desert banksia(Banksia ornata) was conspicuous,but the flower cones were mostly greyand withered. The most prolific colourwas the creamy-pink clusters of thefringe myrtle (Calytrix tetragona)interspersed with patches of goldenpennants (Loudonia behrii), unusuallyyellow candles (Stackhousia vimined)(plate I) and the yellow of the acacia

Near clay pan areas and swampswhich were filled with water, we weredelighted with the cyclamen pinkblooms of Melaleuca wilsonii and thepea-green low bushes of Melaleucaneglecta. There were patches of brightblue Dampiera lanceolata and somescarlet mint-bush (Prostanthera aspa-lathoides), while various shades ofyellow were supplied by at least fourspecies of guinea flower (Hibbertiafasiculata, stricta, virgata and sericea). Especially deUghtful discoveries were pink zieria (Ziera veroniced)with citronella-scented leaves (plate2), small leafed waxflower (Erioste-mon difformis), yellow Phebaliumstenophyllum, blue spike milkwort(Comesperma calymega), flax-leavedlogania (Logania lini folia) andseveral varieties of orchids, as well asthe diminutive rosettes of the flannelcudweed (Actinobole uliginosum),and a peculiarly unattractive-lookingplant with tiny ruddy whee
